Workshop No.1 – Introduction To Applied Mycology

Let’s grow mushrooms! In-person and online hybrid training

A fascinating introduction to applied mycology, this 2H30 workshop aims to familiarize participants with the cultivation of edible mushrooms and lay the foundations for mycological self-sufficiency. At the end of the course, participants are expected to feel confident about growing their own mushrooms and propagating their own strains.

This hybrid face-to-face/online (distance learning) course is an introductory course that has been developed over the past 10 years by community associations and schools in Quebec, Ontario, the United States and Europe, as well as at our Coopérative Centrale Agricole facilities.

  • For online participants, the practical part will be made possible by parcel post delivery of a culture mycelium accompanied by the reproduction kit*.

  • Theoretical part

The fungal kingdom and the reproductive cycle of cultivated fungi

History of mushroom cultivation and ethnomycology

modern reproduction technology and home-made version (low-tech)

  • Practical section

Reproduction of mycelium on household waste (coffee grounds, sawdust, cardboard, etc.).

Each participant will produce a mushroom cultivation kit, which he/she will learn to maintain and reproduce during the workshop.

The workshop demystifies the fungal kingdom in a pragmatic way, deals with mycelium (mushroom root) reproduction techniques and offers an introduction to multiple applications of contemporary mycology (urban agriculture, reuse of domestic or agricultural residues, circular economy, mycoremediation, traditional and alternative medicines – DIY – biohacking). Emphasis on certain sub-themes is determined by the interest of participants. Make your voice heard 😀

* For people following the online workshop, aTo ensure timely delivery, registration must take place no later than 4 days before the event. However, it is still possible to take the workshop without having received the breeding kit, and to apply the practical part later, on receipt of the growing kit.

Time-shifted viewing available on request.
